Macrame Wall Hanging: Free Pattern

### Materials:

- 8 pieces of cord, each 6 feet long

- A dowel or branch (approximately 12 inches wide)

- Scissors

- Optional: Tape measure, masking tape

### Steps:

1. **Prepare Your Workspace**:

   - Secure your dowel horizontally on a work surface or hang it so it’s easy to work with.

2. **Attach Cords to Dowel**:

   - Fold each of the 8 cords in half.

   - Use a Lark’s Head Knot to attach each folded cord to the dowel. You should have 16 working ends hanging down.

3. **Square Knots**:

   - Separate the cords into four groups of four cords each.

   - Take the first group of four cords. Using the outer two cords as working cords and the inner two as filler cords, tie a square knot.

   - Repeat with the remaining groups of four cords.

4. **Alternating Square Knots**:

   - Skip the first two cords.

   - Take the next four cords and tie a square knot.

   - Repeat with the next sets of four cords until you reach the end, leaving the last two cords out.

5. **Diagonal Clove Hitch Knots**:

   - Start with the leftmost cord. This will be your holding cord.

   - Using the next cord to the right, tie a diagonal clove hitch knot. Continue tying diagonal clove hitch knots with each subsequent cord until you reach the center.

   - Repeat on the right side, mirroring the direction, to create a V shape in the centre.

6. **Adding More Square Knots**:

   - Directly below your diagonal clove hitch knots, separate the cords back into groups of four.

   - Tie a square knot with each group of four cords.

7. **Creating a Pattern**:

   - Alternate the square knots and diagonal clove hitch knots as described in steps 3-6 to your desired length. Typically, you might do 3-4 rows of this pattern.

8. **Finishing Touches**:

   - Trim the ends of the cords to your desired length. You can create a straight cut, a V shape, or leave the cords with varying lengths for a more bohemian look.

   - Optionally, add beads or other decorative elements to the ends of the cords.

This pattern allows for customisation by adjusting the number of rows or adding additional elements like beads. Enjoy your macrame project!
